Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides skilled nursing services to patients under the direction of a physician or midlevel provider, and provides a variety of related services to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment. The scope of the Licensed Practical Nurse includes, but is not limited to, nursing procedures and executing the patient’s nursing care plans, such as, sterile dressings, soaks, compresses, enemas, suppositories, oxygen therapy, catheterization, diabetic care, and pre- and post-operative care.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Licensed Practical Nurse:

 

  • Adheres to LPN established scope of practice; observes clinical protocols, policies, and standards; provides basic patient care and treatments including but not limited to dressing wounds, giving enemas, alcohol rubs, and performing catheterizations.
  • Rooms patient, measures, and records patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. Collects data related to the reasons for patient visits.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, tests and treatments and explain procedures. May assist in examinations, treatments, special tests and/or procedures where directed.
  • Observe patients and reporting changes in patients' conditions, such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and taking any necessary action.
  • Administer prescribed medications or start intravenous fluids and note times and amounts on patients' charts.
  • Where applicable, assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen suppliers.
  • Collect samples such as blood, urine, and sputum from patients, and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Sterilize equipment and supplies, using germicides, sterilizer, or autoclave.
  • Assist physicians, midlevel providers, and office staff with scheduling appointments, keep records and perform other clerical duties as assigned.
  • Set up equipment and prepare medical treatment rooms for patients.
  • Maintains and stocks inventory of office and/or clinical supplies, as well as maintain inventory and requisition of supplies and instruments.
  • Educates patients regarding health-related issues within scope of practice.
  • Coordinates labeling, delivery, and receipt of laboratory specimens and results; provides information and coordinates follow-up visits regarding laboratory results.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Identifies and/or communicates any safety issues for the clinical equipment, building, follows-up to ensure completion.
  • Role may include assisting the provider with real-time documentation of each patient’s medical chart during his or her appointment. 
  • Ability to perform functions using job-related software and systems.
  • Travel may be required to accommodate staffing levels at other clinical facilities.
  • Attendance, promptness, professionalism, the ability to pay attention to detail, cooperativeness with co-workers and supervisors, and politeness to customers, vendors, and patients.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned.

 

Senior Licensed Practical Nurse:

  • Successfully performs the responsibilities of a Licensed Practical Nurse and one or more of the following responsibilities:
    • Support the Practice Manager with the duties of Emergency Preparedness and Environment of Care by performing monthly environmental inspections, providing training to new hires and in-service education to their peers, communicating issues/concerns regarding hazards and/or non-compliance to office leadership, and most importantly, setting the example on a consistent basis.
    • Maintains proper supply quantity, rotation and expiration dates, ensuring incoming supplies have been received and labeled appropriately, maintaining Emergency Response Care for expiration and full supply list, enter in weekly orders for review/submission by manager, monitor oxygen and liquid nitrogen levels, notify manager of order as necessary, communicate any near expiration supply stock to be moved or cost transferred.
    • Manages vaccine supply ordering, monitoring for expired or soon to expire stock and reconcile stock by comparing administered vs. wasted/expired stock. Maintains adequate documentation of refrigeration/freezer temps, back up to manager in the event of an outage/emergency, possess knowledge of appropriate protocols during outage/emergency, create orders for approval by manager, perform and arrange required yearly trainings and in-services for annual site visit, add and train new employees within the IMPACT system.
    • Ensures a well-organized, clean and clutter free laboratory area. Complete training on appropriate handling and storage for test kits and supplies and train others. Conduct reviews to be sure specimens are labeled, handled (stored) and processed appropriately, maintaining all external quality control completion and documentation, including regular survey to verify instruments and equipment are checked, maintained and labeled correctly, ensure refrigerator/freezer temps recorded daily. Act as contact person for any changes or errors discovered during quarterly inspection and provide training or communication back to team members.
    • Accountable for participation in ongoing end user support and training, participating in monthly SuperUser sessions, distributing materials and updated information to support staff within department, serve as primary point of contact for assigned end user questions and answers, provide IHIS assistance, guidance and troubleshooting for support staff, and may assist in upgrade testing, optimization and other activities with the responsibility of communication feedback and lessons to staff within department.
    • Provides training to new clinical staff and ensures on-going annual skills training. Responsible to assure clinical staff are prepared for and successful in Ambulatory Skills Orientation (ASO) class and subsequent annual skills check off. Communicate issues and concerns regarding clinical deficiencies to the attention of clinic management. Provide a minimum of one approved educational in-service per year to clinical staff. Conducts Low Risk Medical Emergency Response drills annually, in conjunction with management and/or safety champion.
    • Helps maintain oversite in regards to population health metrics. They are responsible for running multiple reports on a set schedule to identify patients that are due or overdue for specified preventative screenings. Shares CPC+ outreach efforts with office manager and team. Outreach efforts may consist of my-chart messages, patient phone calls, and letters. They will help facilitate the screening completion by helping to schedule appointments, pend order(s) for the provider or providing the patient a ROI to have outside records showing completion be sent to the PCP. The champion will work with clinic leadership to help identify and develop QI opportunities and will participate and report progress in all necessary meetings.

 

 

Lead Licensed Practical Nurse:

Purpose: 

The Lead Licensed Practical Nurse will be instrumental in assisting management in the day to day operations of the clinic operation as it pertains to the medical support role and patient care. This position will demonstrate strong clinical skills and expertise of all relevant systems and processes. They will be expected to model, train, and promote high functioning clinical support staff from all experience levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Successfully performs the responsibilities of a Senior Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Leads the day to day work and productivity of patient care staff.
  • Advise and assist staff on problem solving patient/customer concerns; as well as address issues associated with clinic operations. 
  • Performs specialized medical procedures of a routine nature, as dictated by established clinical protocol. 
  • Serves as clinical preceptor to enhance training and improve any skill deficiency amongst staff.
  • Aids management in a variety of areas such as but not limited to scheduling, daily work assignments, hiring, training, employee engagement, performance management, identifying areas for service or operational improvement, and reinforcing established expectations from management, and scheduling.

 

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a school of practical nursing.
  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse license in the State of Ohio.
  • BLS certified.

 

Senior Licensed Practical Nurse: All the above in addition to:

  • Minimum one year of employment as an LPN with OSUP, or equivalent experience at OSU within the last year.
  • Successful designation of a champion designation.

 

Lead Licensed Practical Nurse:  All the above in addition to:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an LPN with OSUP, or equivalent experience at OSU within the last year.

Prior experience working in a preceptor designation preferred.

Pay Range

USD $23.74 - USD $35.62 /Hr.
